What is in the symbol
- EAN-13 is 95 modules: start
101, six left digits, center01010, six right digits, end101. The first digit is not its own bars. It picks the L/G parity of the left six: 0 is LLLLLL, 1 is LLGLGG, 4 is LGLLGG, and the other digits follow the GS1 table. The right six digits always use the R set. - UPC-A encodes 12 digits with L on the left half and R on the right half. That is the same pattern as an EAN-13 whose first digit is 0. Quiet zone is 11 modules on the left and 7 on the right for EAN-13, and 9 on each side for UPC-A, plus a white margin.
- Human-readable digits sit under the bars: the leading digit, the left group, and the right group. They are not a substitute for a GS1 license.
- SVG is vector bars with the digits as text. PNG is black and white pixels, one module wide, so a viewer does not blur the edges. Both are built here. No barcode font and no outside service.
- EAN-8 and ITF-14 (the GTIN-14 case symbol) are not drawn. Their check digits are on the UPC check digit calculator.

What does this EAN-13 barcode generator draw?
It draws an EAN-13 or UPC-A symbol as SVG and as PNG, with the digits printed under the bars. The bars use the GS1 patterns: start guard 101, six left digits in the L or G sets chosen from the first-digit parity table, center guard 01010, six right digits in the R set, and end guard 101. A UPC-A is the 12-digit symbol. Its bars match an EAN-13 that starts with 0.
How does the auto check digit work?
Enter 12 digits for EAN-13 or 11 for UPC-A and the page appends the GS1 mod-10 check digit before it draws. Enter the full length and it checks the last digit. If that digit is wrong and auto check digit is on, the image uses the corrected digit and the page says what changed. It will not draw a symbol whose check digit does not match the bars. Turn auto check digit off to reject a wrong digit instead of replacing it.
Can I download SVG, PNG, and a zip of many barcodes?
Yes. One code previews on the page. Download SVG for print and design tools, or PNG for a bitmap. Paste a list or upload a CSV to build a zip of SVG and PNG files. The zip is written in this tab as stored files, with no compression library. Generation does not contact a server.
Will a scanner accept a number I made up?
A scanner can read any well-formed symbol. Retailers, marketplaces, and GS1 databases will not treat a made-up number as yours. Valid retail barcodes must be licensed from GS1 (gs1.org / your local GS1 member organisation). These tools only compute and draw barcodes; we do not sell barcode numbers.
Why might a printed barcode fail to scan?
Leave the white quiet zone empty. Do not crop it and do not put a box or other text against the bars. Print pure black on white, large enough that the narrow bar is at least about 0.3 mm, and do not scale the art so the bars blur. The PNG uses a whole number of pixels per module so the edges stay sharp. EAN-8 and GTIN-14 (ITF-14) symbols are not drawn here.
Does the barcode leave my browser?
No. Encoding, the SVG, the PNG, and the zip are built in this tab. There is no upload, no account, and no request that sends the numbers out. Closing the tab discards the list.
Which number should I put in a Shopify CSV?
Use the full EAN-13 or UPC-A, including the check digit, in the Barcodes column of the product CSV. If you only have the digits without the check digit, calculate it first with the UPC check digit calculator. A UPC-A can also be stored as 13 digits with a leading 0. Check the CSV with the Shopify CSV validator before you import. Missing SKUs can be filled with the SKU generator.
